In 1883, the NSW Government established the Aborigines Protection Act, enacting the right to remove children from First Nations families. This act was abolished in 1969, meaning it was in place for 86 years. This event, in our shameful history, has made its mark; the intergenerational trauma felt by Indigenous peoples is alive and well. It has led to the broken system that we currently live in. It is why youth crime is at its all-time high.
“No one likes being told they’re born to lose, the detonator is primed, just light the fuse” - Kev Carmody.
The Aborigine Protection Act also gave the government the ability to prohibit all use and teaching of First Nations Languages. This was a significant blow culturally, as it actively denied the passage of knowledges in a predominately oral and ancient system. This broke the Aboriginal Songlines. This is like having a library with no books in it. Our Songlines are our "directory" it tells us everything we need to know about that particular Country/Land/Place/Peoples. Every word has rich and valuable knowledge which provides the user of said language, a deep understanding of the environment around them.
These posters were originally designed for a conservation centre, located just outside of Toowoomba. Noongar woman, Dr Cally Jetta, arranged for the posters to get printed onto steel, as signs. The Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation and Education Centre has actively helped breed and save the protected echidna in the Darling Downs Region, as well as helping other species of animals.
For this reason, 10% of all proceeds will be donated to the centre to continue support in their important work.
The continuation of learning Indigenous languages is paramount. The inclusion of language, and the meanings they derive, all create inclusive learning environments. Teaching in an environment that embraces culture, and therefore, embraces language, is a powerful and enriching environment.
Thank you for your time and your support.
